Aurélien Jeanney is French art director and multidisciplinary designer. He works across various media such as posters, typography, books, illustration or motion design. He also runs a publishing house called Maison Tangible with which he promotes emerging design through exhibitions, meetings and public workshops with international artists.

Tell us a fun fact about you Not one but three:
- I'm in love with a hot dog
- I once traveled to the Moon
- I cannot do the same task for more than 15 minutes (that's really hard to deal with)

How did you get into illustration? By accident... I used to be a print-oriented graphic designer, and then I learned motion design in Montreal. And I wanted to make things I create move, so I start with typography, then shapes. And with only two shapes, oh god, you can draw a character.. So that's how it started!

Who or what inspires you the most? Mostly two things: vintage toys and stamps.

What does a typical day look like for you? I'm an early bird, so I go to the gym early in the morning. Then I go to my office. Most of my days at the office look the same : Work, coffee, more work, more coffee, punching my co-workers faces on Street-Fighter Super on Super Nintendo, work, lunch, work, mails, coffee, Street-fighter, Work. And beer. That's important to have a beer after a big day at the office :)

What do you do when you have a creative block? As I said, beating my friends on Street-Fighter is a good way!

Top three clients you've worked with? Awww. Tough question. But my favourite client ever is Bien Urbain festival because they are friends of mine and they let me explore many graphic things during our collaboration. And I'm very lucky because I only have two clients on my black list (within 10 years of freelancing). Otherwise, I so proud to have worked with clients such as Flik-Flak, French ministry of Culture and communication, the City of Paris or Montreal, or prestigious agencies.

What tools (digital or not!) do you use to create your work? Mostly Illustrator and After Effects. I have a love/hate relationship with Photoshop. But I draw on sketchbooks too. With a compass and a ruler, because I like geometric things too much to trust just my arm.

What's your favourite resource for inspiration? Vintage childrens books, Futurism and Cubism, and nineteenth century engraving (Gustave Doré, George Roux, Léon Benett, etc.). I am a great monomaniac of Jules Verne's novels and the graphic universe that emerges from them.

Do you have any tips for artists thinking of doing freelance? Be yourself, work hard, and play Street-Fighter :)

What would your dream project be? Maybe create a huge immersive exhibition for children with some augmented reality, virtual world, music and stamps... Cause you need to have stamps to have a good project :)
