Richard Keeling Interview


Richard Keeling is a freelance designer, illustrator and art director usually based in London but often working remotely as he travels the world. He loves working with interesting brands and has experience creating brand identities, campaign art direction and illustration. Past clients include All Star Lanes, Die Zeit, American Express, Tishman Speyer, Brewhouse & Kitchen and more. Colour is his favourite and he enjoys telling stories in his designs without the need to over complicate or overload them with unnecessary information.

Tell us a fun fact about you Michael Jackson was my 1st concert.

How did you get into illustration? From tracing comics as a kid.


Who or what inspires you the most? My friends and shadows.

What does a typical day look like for you? At the moment I like to keep as busy as possible.

What do you do when you have a creative block? Start something else. Even if badly. It often turns into something just from trying.

Top three clients you've worked with? All Star Lanes, Without Violence and Photomatic.

What tools (digital or not!) do you use to create your work? Indesign. I know its weird.

What's your favourite resource for inspiration? Taking a walk.


Do you have any tips for artists thinking of doing freelance? Don’t worry about what you have to do. Just try, Theres always something else to try until it starts working. Just keep trying. Do it badly if needs be, at least that will get you to start without the pressure of nailing it 1st go.
