Rachel Joy Price Interview
Rachel Joy Price is a lettering artist based in London. Rachel previously worked in the design industry for seven years until taking the leap to spend all her days lettering. She works on a mix of hand painted signs as commissions for individuals and lettering for more commercial briefs, such as packaging, editorial/magazine pieces, posters and crafted type for logos. Rachel also had the fun of working in a 3D painting virtual reality space earlier this year, creating 3D pieces of lettering!
I was inspired to pursue a love of lettering after discovering that my Great Grandfather was a sign painter, starting his practice in Northern Ireland, where I've been told he was part of the team of sign painters on the Titanic, before moving to East London working for 'Bow Signs'.
Slowly building up an interest in it over years alongside working as a designer in London studios.

Wake up and check emails and make sure I am clear about what needs to be done that day. Have some breakfast and usually do a couple of hours of painting before putting on my trainers and doing a quick run before lunch. (To let some layers of paint dry!) Afternoons are often powering through either more digital lettering using my ipad pro/wacom with my laptop, starting off work with pens and ink - scanning in and working into pieces. Then switching back to painting as and when. I like to plan evenings with friends as a full day on my own gives me cabin fever!

iPad Pro has been so so instrumental in my work - I think its great to embrace digital technology. It was great working with google in their Tilt Brush 3D space to create 3D type. Also my trusty Wacom for using with my laptop. Then a lot a lot of paint brushes and one shot paint for sign pieces.
If you can support yourself, just make the leap and go for it. It’s the best thing I have done in years - and I have found the more time you can put into it the more opportunities that come. And use Instagram - such a great tool for new business.
At the moment probably to work on an exhibition/book/outdoor space with a team of creatives producing work around women's voices... celebrating/inspiring.
