Gemma Lazenby Interview

Gemma is a UX Designer by day and at all other possible times she is a digital letterer. Her style is simplistic, block colours, mixing lettering styles into a composition whilst using subtle tones of contrasting colours. Gemma's words and phrases are often influenced by her anxiety. She uses these thoughts and feelings to turn them into positive messages for daily dealings with anxious thoughts.

Tell us a fun fact about you I've handmade every card I've given out in the past 4 years! Love giving out something handmade!

How did you get into illustration? I knew I wanted to be a graphic designer from a young age so I studied Graphic Comms at Uni and then became a graphic designer and now a UX designer. I'm not an Illustrator, but I got into digital lettering because of my love for fonts!

Who or what inspires you the most? Daily dealings with an anxious brain inspires me to create work that is positive!

What does a typical day look like for you? I work as a UX designer throughout my 9-5 and love getting home and spending hours in the kitchen cooking up a storm! Love trying out cooking new things, especially asian food! I recently cooked my own vegetable gyoza as a side dish, gyoza skins and all!

What do you do when you have a creative block? I usually cook! I find it so therapeutic and I seem to think about nothing while I do it.

What tools (digital or not!) do you use to create your work? Procreate and Apple Pen!

What's your favourite resource for inspiration? My colour palettes are all usually inspired from Scandinavian interior design and my phrases are all positive turns on my own personal thoughts.

What would your dream project be? Designing and painting a lettering mural on the side of a building.

How can fans keep up-to-date with your work? Instagram
